You've done the work. Why isn't it paying off?

Running flat out. Real expertise. A mission you're still delivering under real pressure. You've built a career on being capable — but few leaders ever stop to ask where their real strengths lie, or how their team is naturally wired. That's not a strategy problem. It's a strengths problem. I help GovCon, government, and financial/professional services leaders find that answer and lead from it, using CliftonStrengths and Scaling Up.

Three constraints. One root cause.

Strip away the symptom, and the cause is almost always the same: strengths that were never identified, or never put to work. Find the constraint that matches what you're facing below.

GovCon / Cybersecurity / Cloud

Government Agencies

Doing More With Less, Without Losing the Mission.

For agency leaders sustaining mission delivery under real headcount pressure.

B2B / Financial / Professional

You're the Most Qualified Person in the Room. You're Still Losing the Deal.

For financial and professional services leaders whose expertise isn't translating into wins.

About Awen Strategy

I named my company Awen — the Welsh word for inspiration — because inspiring growth is the whole point: first in myself, then in the leaders I work with. That drive comes from 21 years serving in the U.S. Army and 20+ years leading operational units and business development for organizations behind the scenes of national security — service to others is the value that runs underneath all of it.

Frequently asked

Is this the same as general leadership coaching?+

No. Most leadership coaching works on the individual in isolation. This starts with a validated CliftonStrengths diagnostic to determine whether your growth model even fits how your leaders are wired to operate — coaching comes downstream of that diagnosis.

Do I need to know CliftonStrengths already?+

No — we handle the diagnostic. You just need to be willing to look honestly at whether more BD, more headcount, or more marketing is actually the constraint, or a symptom of one underneath it.

What is CliftonStrengths, and why do you use it instead of another framework?+

CliftonStrengths is a validated assessment that identifies how your leadership team is naturally wired to think, decide, and operate. We use it because it gives us an objective, evidence-based read on the actual constraint — not a subjective opinion about what's "wrong."

What's the Scaling Up framework, and how does it fit in?+

Scaling Up is an operating system for turning strategic insight into consistent execution. Once the CliftonStrengths diagnostic identifies where leadership is misaligned, Scaling Up is the structure we use to build the fix into how your team actually runs — not just a one-time recommendation.

Who is Awen Strategy's coaching built for?+

GovCon, cybersecurity, and cloud leaders whose BD activity isn't converting into scaled growth. Government agency leaders sustaining mission delivery under real headcount pressure. Financial and professional services leaders whose expertise isn't translating into wins.

What makes Awen Strategy different from a marketing agency or general consultant?+

A marketing agency or generalist consultant can help with output — more content, more proposals, more outreach. Awen starts one level deeper: diagnosing whether the leadership behind that output is operating from its strengths in the first place. Output without that alignment just repeats the same result faster.

CliftonStrengths Assessment

Using the Gallup CliftonStrengths assessment, we identify your natural talents — and where those talents are working for you, and where they aren't. This is the foundation every engagement is built on, regardless of industry or role.

3

Strategic Focus

What we find determines which of three paths fits your situation:

  • 1:1 Strategic Partnership — When the constraint sits with you as a leader, we partner with you to apply your strengths to operate and achieve your vision.
  • Team Strengths Partnership — When the constraint is how your team works together, we extend the CliftonStrengths assessment to your team and partner with the group to build a strengths-based culture.
  • Scaling Up Partnership — When the business itself is stuck or has hit a plateau, we partner with your leadership team to apply the Scaling Up framework and work through the questions that determine whether you're built to scale:
    • Do we have the right people in the right roles to scale to the next level?
    • Do we have the right strategy in place to scale?
    • Do we have the right systems needed to execute at the next level?
    • Do we have the cash flow to support and sustain operations at the next level?

Same starting point. Same foundation. The path we take from there is determined by what your CliftonStrengths results actually show — not a one-size-fits-all program.

Why I Coach

I spent 21 years serving in the U.S. Army and 20+ years leading operational units and business development for organizations behind the scenes of national security. That's the lens I coach through: read the situation fast, ask the question that cuts to what matters, hold people accountable like the stakes are real — because I'm used to environments where they were. Regardless of role, I have walked the paths that my clients are walking now.

Now I run Awen Strategy, a service-disabled veteran-owned firm coaching leaders in GovCon, cybersecurity, and B2B professional services who are scaling fast. I'm an ICF ACC, a Gallup-Certified CliftonStrengths Coach, and a Cornell High Performance Leadership grad (Scaling Up certification in progress) — but what actually sets me apart is that I pair strengths-based coaching with the operational discipline of a founder who's built and scaled the kind of business his clients are trying to build.

Jim Williams — Why I Coach

I named my company Awen — the Welsh word for inspiration — because that's the whole point. I love to inspire growth: first in myself, then in the executives and businesses I work with. That's not a slogan for me, it's the reason I get up and do this work. "Strategic" is my top theme in the Gallup CliftonStrengths Full 34 Assessment.

Service to others is the value that runs underneath everything I do, on and off the clock. It's why 21 years serving in the U.S. Army and 20+ years supporting national security missions never felt like a detour from coaching — it was the training ground for it. You learn to read people, ask the right question at the right moment, and show up for someone else's mission before your own. The Maryland Innovation Center recently recognized that with their Best Listener award, and honestly, that's the compliment I'm proudest of. Listening well is where every real breakthrough with a client starts.

What I offer isn't generic coaching — it's strengths-based development paired with the operational discipline of someone who's actually built and scaled a business. As an ICF ACC and Gallup-Certified CliftonStrengths Coach, I help you understand what you're naturally built for. As a founder who's lived the GovCon and professional services world, I help you turn that into real, measurable growth. I'm not here to hand you a framework and walk away — I'm here to inspire the change, then help you execute it.

Strength to Build What's Next

Your Pipeline Is Full. Your Growth Still Isn't.

For GovCon and cybersecurity leaders whose BD volume isn't converting into scaled growth.

You've invested in more proposals, more pipeline, more BD headcount — and revenue still isn't scaling the way the activity suggests it should. That's not a pipeline problem. It's a leadership-capacity problem: pipeline only converts when the leadership behind it is aligned enough to execute on what it produces.

We use a CliftonStrengths diagnostic to find exactly where that alignment is breaking down, then build a Scaling Up execution rhythm around it — so growth stops depending on adding more activity and starts depending on removing the real constraint.

Strength to Sustain the Mission

Doing More With Less, Without Losing the Mission.

For agency leaders sustaining mission delivery under real headcount pressure.

Reduced headcount doesn't have to mean reduced mission delivery — but only if leadership capacity is deliberately built to absorb it, not stretched thin and hoping. This isn't a soft-skills add-on; it's an operational necessity.

Using a CliftonStrengths-based diagnostic, we identify where your leadership team's strengths are being underused or misapplied, then build the coaching and structure to sustain delivery with the team you actually have.

Strength to Lead From Here

You're the Most Qualified Person in the Room. You're Still Losing the Deal.

For financial and professional services leaders whose expertise isn't translating into wins.

More content, a sharper pitch, a stronger personal brand — you've tried it, and prospects still default to the safer, cheaper, more familiar name. That's not a visibility problem. Visibility only converts when the leader behind it is operating from genuine strengths, not around them.

We use CliftonStrengths to pinpoint the misalignment and build coaching that makes your expertise the obvious, credible choice — not just another qualified option.
